WA swim, wrestling teams start strong The Washington Academy (WA) swim team has had a successful season so far. This year the team is being coached by Alex McCarthy. The boys team is particu- larly strong this year and won their first home meet against Brewer High School on December 15. Coach McCarthy also enjoyed his first combined team win on January 12 against George Stevens Acad- emy. Top scorers for the season are soph- omore Zain Fitzsimmons and senior Ava Emery. The team is also building towards the future with strong freshman perfor- mances from Nick Luuring and Sophie Holm. Class B state qualifiers in multiple events include Fitzsimmons, Emery, junior Matyas NachtigaU and senior Jodie Harris. The wrestling season is also well under way. All five team members already have a win under their bell The team is coached by Guadalupe Soto, and the members in- clude freshmen Tanner Rolfe and Taber Helton, sophomore Tristin Taylor and jun- iors Isaac Demott-Stowell and Josiah Brown. The WA fitness room recently received a new record board. The board was donat- ed in memory of Camron Roberts ' 17 by the Roberts family. Camron set the all- time record for the dumbbell bench press in 2017 with a weight of 275 pounds. This record is now permanently recorded on the dry erase board, which is also begin- ning to hold other fitness records. On January 30 students and faculty gathered for the second quarter awards assembly for students who received hon- ors or high honors for the second quarter. Awards were also presented to students of the quarter for citizenship, academics and kindness. Certificates were also awarded to four employees of the quarter. Students of the quarter for citizenship are freshman Selena Williams, sophomore Ryan Con- ley, junior Joe Bragg and senior Lauren Wallace. Students of the quarter for aca- demics are freshman Samuel Somes, soph- omore Bishmita Dahal, junior Braydi Dana-Surles and senior Paige Wentworth. Students of the quarter for kindness are freshman Sarah Otto, sophomore Made- lyn Wdley, junior Jackson Saumur and senior Jodie Harris. Employees of the quarter are Niikki Carter, Stephanie See- ley, James Roberts and Rick Zhang. This semester WA has added the Fly Fishing Club advised by science teacher Don Sprangers to the list of after-school activities. The WA Student Council constructed a Caring Tree to help promote and reward kindness throughout the school.
