11 December, 2015 THE QUODDY TIDES Page 33 PAWS is seeking to send elder cats home for holidays PAWS Brave Hearts in Calais is once again hosting its Home for the Holidays adoption event with the goal of finding loving homes for the adult cats in its care. The organization is waiving its full adop- tion fee for all elder cats and 50% of its fee for cats over the age of three for all families approved to adopt by Thursday, December 31. As always, the adoption fee for both senior citizens over 65 and veter- ans is half price for any adult cat. While the adoption of all cats is a prior- ity, the placement of elder, special needs and shy cats is at the top of the list. As loving, longtime guardians face new liv- ing situations, like long-term care, they must also make decisions about the care of their beloved animal companions. Some elder cats and dogs in PAWS care were adopted many years ago with the understanding that, during this time of need, the organization would rehome these friends. Shy and special needs cats face differ- ent challenges. The hustle and bustle of shelter care can be daunting for shy fe- lines, especially those who have been lost or abandoned and survived outdoors alone. Special needs cats often require a recupera- tion period or a plan for managing their healthcare when they are adopted. PAWS is also interested in placing cats into short-term foster homes that will pro- vide them with a fresh opportunity to thrive in a home setting. The goal of fos- ter care is to help each animal recover from the loss of a loved one or the trauma they have experienced and to become more adoptable in the care of a compas- sionate family. ; PAWS will help adopters or those will- ing to make a short-term commitment to foster a cat in need make a perfect match. Adoptions include spay/neuter, all age-ap- propriate preventive care, a free local wellness exam, microchip and 30 days of insurance. To get the process started, call 454- 7662, e-mail or stop by during walk-in hours on Thurs- day, Friday or Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Those who wish to help these animals through a donation may do so via mail at PAWS, 368 South St., Calais, ME 04619 or at .
